Built to conquer some of the toughest terrain while providing outstanding comfort, the Prado TX-L remains one of the most respected four-wheel-drive vehicles in Kenya. The particular vehicle shown is not a standard Prado—it has been extensively modified into a fully equipped overlanding and expedition vehicle, making it ideal for long-distance touring, camping, safaris and serious off-road adventures.
Under the bonnet, the Prado TX-L is commonly powered by Toyota’s 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV turbo-diesel engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, although some import markets received the 2.7-litre petrol engine. The diesel engine is particularly popular for its excellent torque, impressive fuel economy and effortless towing capability. Toyota’s full-time four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case provides exceptional grip on tarmac, gravel, mud, sand and rocky terrain, ensuring confidence in virtually any driving condition.
Inside, the Prado TX-L offers a spacious and luxurious cabin designed for both daily driving and extended expeditions. The interior comfortably accommodates up to seven passengers, with high-quality leather seats, power-adjustable front seats and generous legroom throughout. Premium features include dual-zone automatic climate control, rear air-conditioning vents, a touchscreen infotainment system, smart key with push-button start, cruise control, a reverse camera and a multifunction steering wheel, creating a refined driving experience for both driver and passengers.
Safety is one of the Prado’s strongest attributes. The 2019 TX-L comes equipped with multiple airbags, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control. Depending on the market specification, the Off Road model may also include Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control and a rear differential lock, providing exceptional control on steep, slippery and uneven terrain. Along the sides, the vehicle is equipped with heavy-duty rock sliders, bolt-on fender flares, dark privacy tint, and a wider stance thanks to aggressive offset wheels. The suspension appears to have been upgraded with an approximately 2 to 3-inch lift kit, improving ground clearance and off-road capability. It also rides on large mud-terrain tyres fitted to black beadlock-style alloy wheels, providing superior traction on mud, sand and rocky trails.
The roof has been purpose-built for expedition travel with a full-length aluminium roof rack, a 270-degree side awning for camping and outdoor activities, and a roof-mounted LED light bar for enhanced visibility during night driving.
At the rear, the Prado features a heavy-duty steel rear bumper, a swing-away spare wheel carrier, a jerry can holder, integrated recovery points, and dark smoked LED tail lamps, all of which enhance both functionality and rugged styling.
Inside the cabin, an AUXBEAM switch controller has been installed, allowing the driver to independently operate various aftermarket accessories. These include roof-mounted LED lights, grille lights, reverse/work lights, rock lights, rear auxiliary lights, additional power circuits, along with spare programmable switches for future accessories. This setup gives the driver complete control over the vehicle’s auxiliary equipment during off-road or camping expeditions.
